With a rich musical palette and an impressive line-up of exciting guest artists, our 49th season offers something for everyone … from inspiring masterworks, intriguing classical plus, enthralling pops, entertaining cabaret to delightful family concerts.

David Jalbert brings his musicality and phenomenal technique back to the Thunder Bay stage with Beethoven's heroic Emperor concerto. First heard as part of the TBSO composer workshop several years ago, In the Beginning is a brilliant Canadian piece perfect to launch the season, and Mozart's Prague symphony provides a sparkling concert finale.

Franz Joseph Haydn · Symphony No. 102
Somers's suite paints a rugged musical picture of the vast semi-wilderness of Northern Ontario. TBSO Principal Cellist Marc Palmquist performs Boccherini's virtuosic cello concerto, and two classical masterpieces bookend the concert: Mozart's brilliant wind serenade and Haydn's inventive 102nd Symphony.

Danny's unique sensibility, and the compelling beauty and expansive vision of his songs has resonated with many who have seen him perform. He will bring his wide variety of influences to the stage in a concert featuring his own songs as well as those of some of his favourite songwriters, all supported by the beautiful colours of the TBSO. Don't miss this local treasure!

Francis Poulenc · Sinfonietta
The thrilling virtuosity of Jasper Wood shines in Vieuxtemps's daring and poetic 5th violin concerto. The light-hearted and somewhat satirical Sinfonietta by Poulenc, and the optimistic 5th symphony of Schubert will leave audiences in exceptionally good cheer.

Johann Sebastian Bach · Brandenburg Concerto No. 1
The lyrical and energetic Proud Prisoner by Pergolesi opens this concert of mostly baroque music. Telemann's sparkling Trumpet Concerto and the popular first Brandenberg Concerto by Bach feature Principal Trumpet Merrie Klazek and Concertmaster Thomas Cosbey respectively. It's Steven Baric who transports us to present day with the world premier of his Chamber Symphony.

Celebrate the Silver Jubilee of TBSO Principal Violist Catherine Jillings in a performance of Bartok's eloquent and mournfully poignant viola concerto. Dvorak's inventive Symphonic Variations and the joyous celebration of landscape, legends, and history of Rhineland in Schumann's Rhenish symphony provide an intriguing contrast.

Johannes Brahms · Serenade No. 1, Op. 11
Beethoven's inspiration abounds. One of Canada's most prolific composers, Gary Kulesha's 3rd symphony was directly inspired by Beethoven's 6th (Pastoral) and 7th symphonies. Beethoven's style is also clear in Brahms's 1st serenade. Katherine Chi returns to wow audiences in the concerto described as "pleasant to the ear and murder on the fingers!"

From Smetana to von Weber, the works on this program are at once a salute to the past and a look towards the future. The melodies and the harmonies break the barriers of their time while providing a soothing feeling from earlier times. TBSO Bassoonist Karine Breton offers an introspective performance of Canadian composer Mozetich's bassoon concerto.

The joy and beauty of Mozart's liturgical works is explored in the miniature Venite populi for 2 choruses and the lyric Vespers. Torke layers instrumental vibrations to create his acoustically shiny variations, and Mendelssohn's Reformation symphony brings the performance to a triumphant close.
